Manslaughter

Manslaughter refers to the act of unlawfully taking the life of another human being, but unlike murder, the act is committed without premeditation or malice.

Although the alleged offense can arise in a variety of situation, the charge typically falls under two main categories:

  • Involuntary Manslaughter: a person will be charged with involuntary manslaughter when they unintentionally kill another person as a result of their extreme negligence or reckless behavior.
  • Reckless Homicide: a person will be charged with reckless homicide if they accidently kill another person while driving or operating a motor vehicle, snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle, or watercraft. This crime is sometimes referred to as vehicular manslaughter or vehicular homicide.

The state harshly prosecutes these cases, and if you are found guilty of manslaughter, you could face a number of serious penalties. If convicted, you could be sentenced to imprisonment, large fines, restitution to the victim's family, probation, community service, mandatory counseling, driver's license suspension, a mark on your permanent record, and more.
